    • Description: the beaver is a ubiquitous sight throughout the river-lined woods of southern Hercua, felling trees and constructing dams in the middle of the aforementioned rivers. They have four limbs, each with five digits, and are covered in brown fur. They are capable of both swimming and walking on land, aided in the former by a long, flat tail. Beavers do not hibernate during the winter.

    • Description: the cavern fish is a species of Old Fish most resembling latimeria menadoensis on Earth. Thanks to a special “lung” that filters air from brackish water, an abominable set of secretions, and (to be frank) rather tough meat, this fish is rarely found at table, and is literally called “the unpleasant fish” (allutar) in Salvian. Unlike other members of the same genus, the cavern fish does not have whiskers, which is said to make it look less handsome.

    • Description: one of four sapient species on the planet, and the one with the widest range on land (the widest range of all, of course, belonging to the leviathans). Endothermic and bipedal, most body hair has thinned–except for that on top of the head, and (in some races) under the armpits and near the genitalia. Humans are omnivorous by nature, and have incorporated the use of fire into their consumption of meat. They are also insatiable tool users.

    • The tea bush was domesticated relatively recently, a mere 2,000 years ago in the Northeastern Highlands of the High Plateau. The plant resembles nothing so much as a bonsai baobab crossed with a bromeliad, clumps of brown-and-blue leaves bursting forth in wild domes from a thick, gnarly trunk, each stem bearing a flower with twenty silver-white petals. It’s a beautiful plant, and the leaves produce something even more so: a blend that can best be translated as tea, but contains a few different chemicals compared to our own (for example oxalic acid, most frequently found in parsley, and punicalagin, found in pomegranates). It is extremely highly valued by the Hercuans and Kroldistani alike, on the belief that drinking a boiled cup of the stuff keeps away dysentery. (They’re working on that.) For this reason, it’s a high-priced good, and the states of Wenglau have learned to take advantage of this by sending trading ships over due west to become filthy rich, with Visauru as their stopover point.
